KRS-One in Concert

KRS-One (born Kris Parker) was the leader of Boogie Down Productions, one of the most influential hardcore hip-hop outfits of the '80s. At the height of his career, roughly 1987-1990, KRS-One was known for his furiously political and socially conscious raps, which is the source of his nickname, "the Teacher."

brief-history.jpg (10684 bytes)A Brief History of White Music

The premise of the show is simple: what if mainstream pop songs originally sung by white artists were re-interpreted by a trio of African-American performers? Everyone knows that the roots of American pop music are in the African-American culture: ragtime, jazz and blues. Even the Beatles cited rhythm & blues as their inspiration. This show turns the tables a bit by taking music of Buddy Holly, the Mamas and the Papas, Sonny & Cher, Elvis, and the Beatles, and giving them a fresh treatment, full of soul and jazz and snazzy moves. It’s the songs you grew up loving…as they’ve never been sung before: That’ll Be the Day, Where the Boys Are, Blue Suede Shoes, Downtown, Imagine

Ali Babaali-baba.jpg (14955 bytes)

Another in the Cabaret’s tradition of English Panto-inspired holiday shows created by OCT’s own Jim Giancarlo, Jim Malachi and Darcy Danielson. Ali Baba (the black sheep of the Baba family) is on a hero’s quest. He is aided by our narrator, the beauteous Scheherazade, and by a wry Genie (“I prefer Eugene”) and opposed by the arch-villain Pasha Poobah, who plans to subjugate the world by commandeering a certain precious dark substance. Along the way Ali meets Brooklyn-born Ruby Twankey and her mute daughter, Pearl, who operate a Bedouin-breakfast in the desert; an English twit-and-punk pair called Fish and Chip; and a singing-dancing Camel. All of the Panto elements are here: broad humor, puns in abundance, cross-dressing, topical references, wacky romance, wild costumes, audience retorts and an eclectic score with themes pilfered from Rimsky-Korsakov. Order early: our holiday shows sell out quickly.

In Orwell's 1904, the world is comprised of three countries: Oceania and her enemies, Eurasia and Eastasian.  Oceania is a totalitarian society led by Big Brother, where everyone's behavior and thoughts are consered.  The Ministry of Peace declares war, the Ministry of Love breeds hate, and disagreements with Big Brother constitute ThoughtCrime.  Disgusted with his oppressed life, Winston Smith secretly longs to join the fabled Brotherhood, a group of underground rebels intent on overthrowing the government.  Then Winston meets Julia and they commit the crime of falling in love.
