Etta James and The Roots Band
&
Ryan Shaw - LIVE at Britt Festival
With a new slimmed-down look and a rejuvenated
stage show, music legend Etta James celebrates an incredible five decades as a recording
artist. Her 16-year tenure with Chess Records (the label that was the basis
for the movie Cadillac Records) made James one of the most prolific female R&B artists
of the 60s and 70s.
 |
Photographer:
Anthony Montes De Oca, 2006 |
Her string of hits included her signature tune, "At Last." Throughout
her career, James has persevered through highs and lows, reinvention and rejuvenation. Her
latest album, All The Way, runs the gamut from R&B chestnuts to show tunes,
to James' distinctive renditions of Prince's "Purple Rain" and James Brown's
"It's A Man's Man's Man's World."
Ryan Shaw
Singer/songwriter Ryan Shaw is out to revive the passion and soul of the
Golden Age of Rhythm & Blues (1960-1972) for a new generation. His debut album, This
Is Ryan Shaw, combines a powerfully expressive voice with a clutch of great songs
both classic and new, including "Do the 45" and "I Am Your Man." Shaw
returns to Britt after opening for Joss Stone in 2007.

Blues
Traveler - LIVE at Britt Festival It's not every
band that's still staking out new musical territory and embracing fresh challenges more
than 20 years into their career, but that's the case with Blues Traveler. Having long ago
graduated from the jam-band underground to mainstream stardom, the iconoclastic combo has
always played by its own rules. The band's best-known single, "Run-Around," was
the longest-charting radio single in Billboard history, and over the years the band has
performed more than 2000 live shows. The new album North Hollywood Shootout demonstrates
the enduring strengths of the band's songwriting, the interactive instrumental chemistry
and the spontaneous spirit of their legendary live shows. Special Guest TBA.

Andrew Bird"Bird could be the only performer who's
lit up both Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo with a combination of vocals, violin, guitar,
glockenspiel and whistling...he uses centuries-old instrumentation to give depth and soul
to folk rock." ~ESQUIRE
Andrew Bird's initial commercial exposure came through collaborative work with the band
Squirrel Nut Zippers. Taking on the role of bandleader, Bird released three albums with
his group Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire before they unofficially disbanded in 2003. Bird went
on to radically re-invent himself as a solo artist and in January 2009, he released Noble
Beast, his fifth solo album. Special guest TBA.

Cowboy
Junkies & Son Volt - LIVE at Britt Festival The Canadian alternative rock band Cowboy Junkies has earned critical acclaim and
a cult following with their introspective mix of blues, country, folk, rock and jazz. They
first had widespread success with the album The Trinity Session, which was
recorded in Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity. In one 14-hour session in 1988, the band
recorded the album's 12 songs, including the band's haunting version of "Sweet
Jane." The Cowboy Junkies returned to the church, joined by Ryan Adams, Natalie
Merchant and Vic Chesnutt, in celebration of the original recording's 20th anniversary.
The resulting Trinity Session Revisited, was released as a DVD/CD in 2008 to
overwhelming critical response.
Son Volt
Alternative country band Son Volt was formed by Jay Farrar in 1994 after
the breakup of the band Uncle Tupelo. The band's sound ranges from quiet folk/country
ballads, to bar house rockers in the spirit of Neil Young with Crazy Horse. Son Volt is
often compared to Neil Young with Crazy Horse, The Jayhawks and R.E.M. (in the Automatic
for the People era) Often considered a staple band of the alternative country
movement, their music is perhaps better described as genre-spanning traditional American
music. The band is touring in support of its fifth album The Search.

anymore; Shirley makes do by having an ongoing one-sided conversation with her kitchen
wall. And just when it seems nothing will ever change-something does. Shirley's best
friend wins a trip for two to Greece, and offers Shirley the chance to go. Will she take
it?
In Shirley Valentine, our Liverpudlian Everywoman protagonist uses her very
common tongue with humor, grace and eloquence to reveal her heart, enchant the audience,
and take us with her as she decides whether-or not-to make a jailbreak.
