Steve
Miller Band / Joe CockerInitially a fixture in San Francisco's
"Summer of Love" scene as leader of the Steve Miller Band, the Texas-bred
singer, songwriter and guitarist used his blues/rock roots to transcend the psychedelic
trend and develop his own enduring sound. The band's Greatest Hits 1974-1978 has
been certified platinum 13 times. Cumulatively, the Steve Miller Band has sold 25 million
records since 1968's Children of the Future.
Joe Cocker possesses one of the world's most instantly recognizable and iconic voices.
He burst into the scene by injecting hystericized soul into everything he touched, namely
the Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends." "You Are So
Beautiful" and his Top 10 hit "Up Where We Belong" continue to be pop music
favorites. The uniformly blues/gospel-ish material on his latest release Hymn for My
Soul spans the decades.

The
Golden Age of the Silver Screen (Part I)
Janet Sung, violinThis concert opens with a suite from the 1938
Oscar-winning film The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn and Olivia
de Haviland. Consid ered by many
to be one of the best film scores ever composed, this work may have literally saved its
composer's life. Born into a Jewish home, Erich Korngold was called to Hollywood for this
project from his native Austro-Hungarian home just before the Anschluss. He ended up
becoming a naturalized citizen and staying in the U.S. where he composed dozens of film
scores and concert works including the lyrical Violin Concerto on tonight's program.

The
Golden Age of the Silver Screen (Part II) / Britt Orchestra This second night celebrating music of the silver screen opens with music
from one of the most attractive of Shostakovich's forty film scores.
Next, legendary husband and wife virtuosos Jaime Laredo(violin) and Sharon Robinson
(cello) perform a double concerto written by Miklós Rózsa for Jascha Heifetz and Gregor
Piatigorsky. Rózsa spent 55 years of his adult life living in Los Angeles and working as
one of the titans of Hollywood's Golden Age. Between 1936 and 1982 he scored over 100
films including Ben Hur, Spellbound, The Lost Weekend, El Cid, Ivanhoe and The
Green Berets. He was nominated for 17 Academy Awards and received 3 Oscars. All this
was in addition to 45 non-film compositions, one of the most famous of which is tonight's
featured wor k, his Sinfonia Concertante.
The second half of the concert features guest artist Sara Davis Buechner performing two
unusual pieces for piano and orchestra that were written for films. Addinsell's Warsaw
Concerto is from a WWII love story and contains a passionate and unforgettable love theme.
Concerto Macabre is from a Gothic romance. (The latter has the distinction of being the
only piano concerto ever written where the soloist concludes the piece without the
accompanying orchestra. The film ends dramatically with the main character accidentally
setting fire to his surroundings and then playing this concerto as the fiery ruins crash
around him.)

Midori!
/ Britt Orchestra
| Beethoven |
King Stephen Overture |
| Mozart |
Symphony No. 41, ("Jupiter") |
| Shostakovich |
Violin Concerto No. 1 |
The Britt Orchestra will also perform another work of genius-Mozart's last, and many
say greatest, symphony. In Woody Allen's 1979 film Manhattan, his character regards the
second movement of this symphony to be one of the reasons why life is worth living. The
Finale of the "Jupiter" Symphony is exhilarating, dazzling and truly sublime. A
work of innovative genius by the greatest compositional prodigy the world has ever known.
And last, but not least, the program features Midori. During her early years at Aspen,
Midori met Pinchas Zukerman, who later said, "Out comes this tiny little thing, not
even ten at the time. I was sitting on a chair and I was as tall as she was standing. She
tuned, she bowed to the audience, she bowed to me, she bowed to the pianist - and then she
played the Bartók Second Concerto, and I went bananas. I sat there and tears started
coming down my cheeks. I said, 'Do you play something else?' and through an interpreter,
she said, 'Yes, the Sauret cadenza of the Paganini Concerto.' Ten years old, and she
already played the Sauret cadenza like only a few people in the entire universe can do at
any time! I'm talking about forever. And she had a tiny little half-size violin, but the
sound that came out - it was ridiculous. I was absolutely stunned. I turned to the
audience and said, 'Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know about you, but I have just
witnessed a miracle.'" Don't miss the miracle of Midori at Britt!

| Gould |
Star-Spangled Overture from American Ballads |
| Gershwin |
Concerto in F |
| Copland |
Symphony No. 3 |
The stars will be out on stage as well as in the evening sky for this
exciting all-American closing night concert. The program opens with Morton Gould's salute
to America commissioned during the Bicentennial to capture the essence of the American
spirit in sound.
A truly American musical voice, George Gershwin possessed a phenomenal gift for melody,
a natural feeling for dramatic pacing and he seemed to know what audiences would like,
remember, and want to hear again. His Concerto in F stands as one of the high points in
the merging of European sensibilities with the freedom, rhythmic excitement, and bravado
of jazz and American musical theater.
Pianist Jon Kimura "Jackie" Parker plays music ranging from Beethoven to
Billy Joel with heart-wrenching feeling. In addition to his prodigious talent,
intelligence and deft touch, he is known for the charismatic personality and joy he brings
to his performances. Jackie's exuberance and warmth are sure to make this an unforgettable
performance of the Gershwin.

Judy
Collins & Dar Williams Few singers
have the staying power of folk icon Judy Collins. She has released more than 40 albums and
inspired millions with her voice. In the early 60s, Collins was drawn to the songs
of social poets Tom Paxton and Bob Dylan, and her early albums In My Life and Wildflowers
broke new ground in the contemporary song movement. Her first major single Both
Sides Now earned her first of many Grammy nominations. Collins started her
independent record label Wildflower Records in 1999, which donates a portion of its
profits to charity.
One of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of her generation, Dar Williams has been
engaging audiences with her musical artistry since the early 1990s when she rose from the
Northeast coffeehouse circuit to the national spotlight. Her music maintains a strong
system of values, idealism and community activism. She returns to Britt after her
remarkable performance opening for Shawn Colvin in 2006.

Lucinda
Williams / The Avett Brothers / The Waifs Lucinda Williams has been bringing folk and blues roots together since the
beginning of her career, which was launched back in the early 80s. 1998's Car
Wheels on a Gravel Road earned Williams a Grammy and in 2001 Time magazine
dubbed her "America's Best Songwriter," a title she upholds.

The Avett Brothers' music is a mix of old-time country, bluegrass, pop melodies, folk,
rock n roll, honky-tonk and ragtime. It's the intensity at which the Avetts pour
their angst, heartache and love into each show that captivates crowds across the country.

Rolling Stone says The Waifs deliver, "tales of home and
heartlandand of missing themover the infectious amalgam of country roots and
folk." Their captivating on-stage chemistry has spilled into a contagious festival

Archy and Mehitable
A typewriter clatters away at midnight in a deserted newspaper office as
archy, the cockroach with the soul of a free-verse poet, pounds out his poems by diving
onto the keys. He writes about the denizens of Shinbone Alley: Broadway the Lightning Bug;
Tyrone T. Tattersall, the actor cat; Big Bill the Tomcat; and the Ladybugs (Who
Arent Exactly Ladies). But mostly he writes about his friend Mehitabel, a feline
fatale who believes herself to be Cleopatra reincarnated, but still cant seem to say
no to a tomcat. This charming, sophisticated and inventive musical is based on
the poems of Don Marquis. Its a gem of a show featuring eccentric characters, a
witty script by Mel Brooks, a Gershwin/Bernstein-inflected score and lots of delightful
singing and dancing.
